September issue

Summer goodness
We hope you're enjoying summer as much as we are! Lots of fresh vegetables, and around here, more canning than ever before - pickles, tomatoes - yum! This month we also refinished the building's original maple flooring (over 100 years old), painted new colors downstairs, and welcomed a new bodyworker to Joyful Path. More on all that is below. This weekend, Rinpoche will share guidance on what it means to walk the path of compassion, and a couple weeks after that, we begin a new series on Loving-Kindness meditation. We hope you can join us!

Rinpoche teaches on the Path of Compassion

Domo Geshe Rinpoche is here this weekend and one evening later in the month to offer her signature teaching style. One or two appointments are still available September 1st - if you have important spiritual questions to ask or would like to request a meditation practice, please contact info@joyfulpath.org to request a time.

  • The Four Wishes that Transform the Heart
    Friday August 31 ・ 7:00-8:30pm
The Buddha taught that spiritual love has four active arms, known as the Four Boundless Attitudes - boundless love, compassion, joy and equanimity. With Rinpoche’s guidance, learn how to open your heart to extend boundless friendship to others. The next day's teaching will expand on the second boundless attitude of compassion. The talk will be broadcast via telephone conference line: (559) 546-1301, access code: 403035#. Times are Central Standard Time.

  • Entering the Path of Great Compassion
    Saturday September 1 ・ 9:00am-12:30pm
This teaching will introduce one of the essential practices in Buddhism - developing bodhicitta, or Altruistic Great Compassion. This special form of compassion revolutionizes our outlook on life and relationship to others, ourselves and spiritual practice. Bodhicitta vows will be offered at the end of the session for those who would like to take them.

  • Contemplative Problem Solving
    Thursday September 20 ・ 7:00-8:30pm
When we have a problem, worry and anxiety are common reactions. Rather than helping, this dysfunctional attention on the problem makes us feel worse and takes us further from a solution. In contemplative meditation, thoughts and preconceptions take a backseat to listening within, making us more receptive to deeper wisdom and understanding, and often bringing fresh results. The talk will be broadcast via telephone conference line: (559) 546-1301, access code: 403035#.

Advance Medical Directives

Saturday September 1 ・ 2:00-3:30pm

If something happens to us, and we are not able to make health care decisions for ourselves, Advance Medical Directives and Medical Power of Attorney will be the only way for our loved ones to know what we wish to happen. A Meriter Social Worker will explain the basics of healthcare power of attorney and advance medical directives, and there will be time to discuss considerations for Buddhist practitioners. If there is time, the group may begin to come up with some standardized language and options which practitioners may choose to adopt or not. Relatives or potential decision-makers in your healthcare can be invited.

Practical Buddhist Wisdom:
Caring for Others

Call in from wherever you are!
Sunday September 2 ・ 10:00-11:30am
Dial 712-432-1699, access code 956210#

Due to the holiday weekend, Prayers for World Peace and Practical Buddhist Wisdom will not be held at Joyful Path this month. However, you can join Lama Gyalmo from Serenity Point in Mount Airy, North Carolina for a teaching by phone! Gyalmo will offer a short teaching on "Caring for Others" followed by a guided Green light meditation.

Loving-Kindness: Series 1

Wednesdays 7:00-8:15pm
September 12 - October 17

Loving-Kindness, also known as metta, is a meditation practice taught by the Buddha to heal troubled states of mind and to cultivate selfless or altruistic love. Our exploration will be guided by the profound teachings Rinpoche has given on the topic, which focus on developing experience with the facets of Loving-Kindness, including:

Optimism Non-violence Being Unafraid Being Relaxed
Gentleness Friendliness Forgiveness Alertness to Others
Each week will focus on one of these elements, exploring it through guided loving-kindness meditation, discussion, and suggestions for home practice. Handouts also provided.

 What's New at Joyful Path

Elaine Russell
Heart Wisdom Bodywork
Introducing a new practitioner at Joyful Path - Elaine Russell, LMT, CBP, MM. She is a nationally certified therapeutic massage practitioner offering Heart Wisdom Bodywork - an incorporation of CranioSacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, BodyTalk, and Manual Lymph Drainage techniques. After meeting her and having a treatment session with her, we are proud to have her services at Joyful Path. Below is a glimpse of the approaches she draws from in addressing the needs of each client. Visit her website to learn more or set up a session.

Visceral Manipulation increases vitality of the visceral organs & surrounding tissues. The easy rocking motion of Lymph Drainage treats edema & boosts the immune system. The tapping technique of BodyTalk combines a range of modalities to reestablish connections in the energetic field. The deep work of Neuromuscular Therapy releases adhesions and restrictions, relaxing the muscles. Gentle CranioSacral Therapy works on restrictions in the brain and nervous system, relaxing the core.

Restoring old beauty
This past month, two wonderful members of our community spent time at Joyful Path, helping with various projects to help keep the Center running. One of them helped refinish the original maple floor in the downstairs hallway - and it is gorgeous! Take a look the next time you're at Joyful Path.

We have more projects and help needed, so if you would like to help out, while getting in some extra time at a consecrated meditation place, let us know. (If you'll be here this weekend, consider staying a bit extra to help out!) Here are some of the projects we could use help with:

  • Painting hallway and other areas
  • Light gardening and lawn care
  • Light carpentry such as cutting and installing three shelves
  • Refinishing outside trim before winter weather
  • Installing tile in small areas
  • Window washing
  • Cleaning out gardening areas
  • Light cleaning such as window washing
  • Winter-proof doorways and window sills
  • Moving washer downstairs
